The International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on Medicine in South Africa takes scholars to Cape Town and Johannesburg and into clinics, hospitals and the renowned halls of The University of Pretoria's School of Medicine.
Scholars visit a rural health center and examine the efforts that are being made at that level to stem the spread of HIV/AIDS. They discover how, with limited infrastructure and medical supplies, doctors bring medical care to impoverished communities.
Through dialogues with community members and health care professionals, scholars learn the medicinal customs and traditions of healing within the community. They also meet with members of non-governmental organizations, discovering first-hand the vital role these groups play in providing worldwide medical relief.
