You will gain insight into the practice of medical informatics, observe a modern hospital in Sydney and visit a cutting-edge facility where scientists are conducting cutting-edge medical research.
In addition, you will have time to take in the history and culture of this unique continent. During independent exploration, you can discover the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney Aquarium, Taronga Zoo or explore the sights and sounds of the bustling Sydney Harbour, including its world famous Opera House.
You may choose to extend your Australian adventure with the three-day optional add-on, offering you the chance to travel to Cairns in the tropical north and explore the untamed and lush landscape of Queensland’s rain forests, as well as sail to and swim over the awe-inspiring marine sanctuary of the Great Barrier Reef. You will also uncover Australia’s roots with a visit to an aboriginal cultural park.

If you opt for China, your voyage will take you to Bejing, Hangzhou and Xi’an to visit major medical universities and hospitals. You will enjoy dialogue with faculty and medical students and actually be instructed in theories and practices of traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture and moxibustion. You will enter previously closed doors and experience firsthand a world of medicine that mixes ancient healing with modern day practices.
During your journey to China, you will savor the riches of this ancient civilization with visits to the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tian’amen Square and Xi’an, the famous burial site of 8,000 Terra Cotta Warriors, as well as many of the other memorable sites and historic wonders of this country that is moving so fast to embrace the 21st century.
An optional three-day add-on will enable you to wrap up your Far East adventure with an incredible exploration of Hong Kong, the “pearl of the orient.” You will discover Hong Kong harbor and its islands, towering Victoria Peak offering a spectacular 1,800 foot high overview of the city, an evening cultural performance and Bauhinia dinner cruise before your return home.

If you choose South Africa, you will travel to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Hazyview where you will visit a rural health center and learn about the efforts that are being made there to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. You will see how, despite limited infrastructure and medical supplies, doctors strive to bring medical care to impoverished communities.
You will also take in many of the sights and sounds of this vibrant nation and have the opportunity to explore historical sites such as Robben Island Prison, where Nelson Mandela was held political prisoner for many years and which is now a monument to the freedom struggle.
Before departing for home, you have the option of adding on a three-day South African Safari in world famous Kruger National Park, including game drives to search for the “big five”: elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and rhinoceros. You will spend your days with Kruger game rangers hearing tales from the bush and enjoy dinners under the stars in this fascinating, wild landscape.
