The International Scholar Laureate Program Delegation on Diplomacy & International Relations in South Africa gives scholars keen insight into the institutions and influences that have changed that country from one of conflict to a democratic superpower of the African continent.
In Cape Town, scholars examine political history and conflict resolution with the Insitute for Justice and Reconciliation. In addition, they meet with some of South Africa’s Parliamentary Representatives, examine the impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis and meet with local grassroots diplomacy organizations that are creating change and tackling the major issues facing the nation.
In Johannesburg, scholars get the opportunity to have a dialogue with students attending the University of Johannesburg Department of Politics and Governance regarding the political climate and the future of the community they live in. Scholars also see the former home of Nelson Mandela and get a lesson in Apartheid in Soweto, home of the freedom struggle.
In Pretoria, the nation's political capital, scholars examine the South Africa-U.S. relationship with U.S. Embassy officials.
These are just a few of the opportunities awaiting scholars on this 10-day journey.
